Judith Sobek Obituary

Judith Everett Sobek, known to those who loved her simply as “Judy,” passed away peacefully on April 11, 2025, at Lafayette Manor in Uniontown, Pennsylvania. She was 76.
Born on October 16, 1948, in Washington, D.C. to Marie Bridges Everett and Benjamin Lawrence Everett, Judy was the kind of person whose presence lit up a room with laughter and love. She is survived by her son Stephen Sobek, her daughter Michelle Sobek, and her siblings Elizabeth Carey (Richard), Steve Everett (Patti), and Danny Everett (Michelle), and her sister-in-law Suzanne Stapleton (Bill). She also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews, each of whom held a special place in her heart.
Judy graduated from Bowie Senior High in 1967 and later attended the University of Maryland, where she studied English and History—subjects that fueled her lifelong love of reading and storytelling. In 1971, she married Stanley S. Sobek. Though they later divorced, they remained close friends until his death in 2018.
Judy built a vibrant career as a charter broker in Annapolis, Maryland. She loved boating on the bay and obtained her Captain’s License. She spent many years chartering, or crewing and catering on the water, sharing her love of the sea with family and friends, as well as celebrities including Tom Cruise, President Bill Clinton and even the Shah of Iran.
After moving on from the charter business she was employed at Saf-T-Pak, where she served for a decade as Seminar Events Coordinator. Her passion for reading, attention to detail, and natural ability to connect with people helped her to build and manage the company’s Seminar and Webinar program, overseeing and editing the company’s training materials for public distribution.
Judy was a foodie long before the word was trendy. She loved to cook, talk about food, watch the Food Network, and share meals with friends and family. She loved entertaining, beach get-aways with “the girls,” eating crabs and spending holidays with family.
Judy retired in 2018 and moved to Newell, Pennsylvania to live with her son, Stephen. Surrounded by books and yarn, she spent her days reading, crocheting gifts for family and friends and watching her favorite shows. A serious illness in March 2023 started a chain of events out of her control. There were many operations, hospital and rehab stays these past two years, and she was never able to fully recover.
Judy had a radiant smile, a kind soul and a generous heart and will be remembered as a cherished mother, a beloved sister, a doting aunt, and a loyal friend.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date and announced on social media.
